Topeng Jimat

Featuring:
I Made Jimat is one of the renown dancer and actor of the great classical Balinese dance masters born in 1948 in Batuan Village. In his newly choreographed dance drama “Kang Cing Wi”, Jimat, who has long and solid experience of dances behind him, re-interprets ancient legend into Topeng Mask theatre and in a very selective manner expresses its beauty in secular theme so that they may be better appreciated.

Story: Kang Cing Wi

Act 1
Two comic servants, Penasar wearing a half mask and Wijil appear on the stage After brief dancing, they eventually pay gesture to their master, the King Jayapangus, presented by Topeng Keras. Jayapangus intends to take a stroll around his kingdom’s territory with the servants.
 
Act 2
The Topeng Keras (violent character) presenting the Prime Minister appears on the stage. He receives special privilege to temporarily safeguard of the royal court while the king being away.
 
Act 3
Four performers wearing masks resembling the villagers appear on the stage expressing their daily routines through dance and pantomime.
 


Act 4
Two Legong Dedari performers appear on the stage representing the spouses of the King Jayapangus, Dewi Danu and Kang Cing Wi. The two spouses are permanently in the state of warfare over Jayapangus. The unsettled quarrel ensues into an endless duel fight.
 
Act 5
A performer wearing a mask of Topeng Sidakarya resembling Dewi Danu’s mother, Bhatari Batur, comes forward in fury intervening them. Under Bhatari Batur’s spell, Jayapangus and Kang Cing Wi immediately turn their appearances into Jero Gede and Jero Luh, the male and female giant puppets named Barong Landung.
 
Act 6
The Barong Landung, the transformations of Jayapangus and his Chinese mistress Kang Cing Wi, though previously being punished are bestowed with magic power and required to guard and protect villages and villagers from demoniac influences and thus they are honored as magical sacred effigies.
