“The Diamond Hour” – Sunrise Meditation at Bali’s Highest Temple

Named for the inverted diamond shape of Mount Agung when approached from a distance, the Diamond Hour is a brief point in time that can only be experienced at sunrise from the highest temple on this most sacred mountain of Bali. Those who have made the trek say that the inspiration lingers with them for a lifetime.
The journey takes you from the fertile terraced base of Bali’s most massive creative force, and thrusts you to the level of the clouds where the weather comes alive and is gently transforming itself at every moment.  Here the wisps of clouds emerge and fade without end, mirroring the ceaseless activity of our thoughts that can only be calmed by meditation. The Diamond Hour is that period when the mind quiets prior to the creation of a new day, and the connection to one’s own heart is reestablished.

The tour begins in pre-dawn darkness at the ARMA Museum and Resort in Ubud, and transports you to the Kingdom of Karangasem and up the southern face of Gunung Agung.  You arrive first at Iseh, the home village of the high priest of Pura Pasar Agung, the highest temple on the mountain (1500m) and your ultimate destination. Following the eruption of the mountain in 1963, the temple was greatly expanded and improved to its current glory, partly as a monument to the great destruction that took place, but also to restore it as the site for offerings to prevent future devastation.

Once on the grounds of the temple, you are free to explore and then settle into your meditation as you await the arrival of sunrise on the face of Agung. This is the time during which all of Bali that extends before you lies still:  from the shoreline dotted with pontoon fishing boats pulled the previous night from sea to sand, to rice terraces in varying shades of green and gold that reflect the life cycle that feeds the island’s inhabitants.  Here you merge with all those on Bali anticipating the sun’s arrival that brings life to a new day. At sunrise, you will enjoy a delicious box breakfast as the breathtaking views to the south and east of Bali are illuminated.
